Project management

Project description

Viral or bacterial infections and anaemia are conditions which usually require a doctor's visit. To diagnose these conditions, trained medical personnel perform complete blood count analysis using expensive flow cytometric lab equipment. Our new product "Microcyte" aims to reduce these high lab investment costs. We are developing a pocket-sized haematology device that makes a low-cost complete blood cell count possible. With an innovative image-based microfluidic approach, our solution reduces the acquisition and maintenance costs for general practitioners and enables the analysis of blood cells in people's homes. Thus, mobile doctors or nursing staff working in the fast-growing home-care health sector could be equipped with our diagnostic point-of-care (PoC) device, as well as in medical-scarce regions that do not have access to hospitals/doctors' surgeries.
Microcyte reduces diagnostic costs, accelerates treatment decisions, and opens new markets in underserved regions and modern outpatient care.

Status/Results

The funding provided by the Gebert Rüf Stiftung enabled the further implementation of the project "Microcyte." Currently, we are improving the technology for image processing and the optical setup of the diagnostic device to meet the criteria for later certification. Throughout the funding period, a prototype was created and improved according to the technological developments.
