Projektbeschreibung

Fires and high-temperature industrial environments pose great risks to human life and infrastructure, yet remain largely inaccessible to current robotic systems. The FireDrone project introduces the world’s first aerial robot capable of safe, autonomous operation in environments up to 200°C. Using patented polyimide aerogel insulation and an internal thermal management system, the FireDrone delivers real-time visual and thermal data from places previously unreachable - such as burning buildings, industrial kilns, or chemical plants.
This breakthrough technology, developed at Empa, enables faster decision-making, reduces downtime, and protects first responders from harm. Through pilot deployments and early partnerships with fire brigades and industry leaders, the project aims to validate commercial use cases and launch a Swiss-made solution for global impact. The FireDrone stands to set a new benchmark in robotics for extreme environments - advancing safety, sustainability, and industrial innovation.

Stand/Resultate

The FireDrone team is focused on transitioning from a validated research prototype to a market-ready solution. Over the coming 16 months, the project will finalize the next-generation FireDrone with improved autonomy, sensing, and ruggedization and conduct pilot deployments at industrial sites and firefighter training centers. Additionally, the team aims to secure letters of intent from pilot partners and prepare for certification and low-volume manufacturing.
Implementation will be led by the soon to be established spin-off company, which will serve as the commercialization vehicle. The project has already built strong partnerships with key industry stakeholders and public-sector actors.
By the end of the InnoBooster phase, we aim to demonstrate clear customer value, secure follow-up funding, and lay the groundwork for market entry - turning a breakthrough innovation into a deployable product with global relevance.
